Abstract

In 1985, the first ICMI Study was launched entitled “The Influence of Computers and Informatics on Mathematics and its Teaching”. Twenty years later, ICMI decided to launch a new Study on “Mathematics Education and Technology – Rethinking the Terrain” whose results were published in 2010 make clear that even if the world is changing, the knowledge we have gained through research and practice is certainly limited but still highly pertinent and useful. This first study launched by the ICMI [3](International Commission on Mathematical Instruction) was devoted to “The Influence of Computers and Informatics on Mathematics and its Teaching”. Those in charge of the Commission were already convinced that the world was changing and that the emerging computer sciences would deeply impact mathematics as well as mathematical teaching. The dynamics anticipated were not exactly those expected, however progressively technological tools and values aided educational systems, start to influence mathematics curricula, teaching and learning processes.
